Personal History | Born and raised in Kansas on Earth, she was trained from a young age to be a healer. Her grandmother became a nurse after her rescue from exile, and her mother was a pediatrician. Cassandra followed in the tradition of healing of her people, but after learning about what Starfleet Officers went through after the Cardassian Wars, she decided on helping those whose wounds weren't visible. She also stepped away from her people's new tradition by abandoning Earth in favor of serving in Starfleet. It was a point of contention between her and her mother for months until Cassandra explained she could pay back their people's debt to the galaxy more by spreading her skills across the Federation, rather than just remaining on Earth. She enrolled for admission to Starfleet Academy and Starfleet Medical, putting herself through as a Psychology major with a focus on cultural traditional therapies. She graduated with honors in the top 10% of her class, and was elated to find her Mother had come around and not only was finally giving consent to Cassandra's plans, but was fully supportive of them. Her initial assignment was on the USS Yorktown as a Junior, but only, Counselor. During her tenure she developed a good rapport with the crew, most especially a Doctor by the name of Jones, and the wife of the XO and her two young children. It was Cassandra's first experience being away from home and though she was homesick, she anchored herself with her friends and the close-knit community of the ship. Her first taste of danger came during what her crew termed the "Wraith Incident." A species of non-corporeal beings were pulling open windows into parallel realities, causing them to overlap, feeding on the emotional energy being generated by people's encounters. Cassandra met two other versions of herself, one who had become a lotus-eating spirit whisperer, and one who had returned to Earth, gotten married and was expecting a child (as her mother had always expected of her). These other visions of herself helped her to both validate her choices in her life, giving her more of a sense of confidence in herself, and at the same time realize that there were still other paths for her to explore. The downturn of that adventure however, was an invasion by a band of especially brutal Klingons from one of the parallel timelines. Cassandra watched as her spaced-out double was molested and hurt by a boarding party and ultimately sacrificed herself, taking the boarding party with her, so that Cassandra's crew could get away. It left her with a distrust of Klingons ever since. Shortly after, she was sitting with Doctor Jones, now her best friend, in a cafe at a Starbase, discussing if she could handle remaining on the Yorktown when a server approached them with a bottle that had been sent to her. It was a crystal decanter with a very ornate stopper on top. When she pulled it out, she realized it was a small ring affixed around the stopper. What caught her attention though, was that it seemed to be made of the same gold and sapphire combination as the headband she wore, and was inscribed with what appeared to be markings in her people's native language. Intrigued by the mystery, she and Doctor Jones attempted to find the man who sent the bottle, but were unable to locate him and instead turned their attention to the ring itself. It took her some time pouring through her grandmother's records, but eventually she translated the ring to say "You are cordially invited..." Confused by what that message could mean, she turned to her best friend, who informed her it was an offer for a job on another ship. Jones had been placed on the Yorktown as a scout and was about to return home, and although still just an Ensign, Cassandra had been invited by the CO to join. Unable to resist meeting the person who could write her language, she put in for a transfer immediately and moved to the USS Nazareth as a Counselor. She was quick to discover it was not a normal Starfleet ship, most of its missions being off the record, and the vast majority of the crew being "outcasts" who were given field commissions, rather than true graduates of Starfleet. She found a ship of lost survivors appealing however, and quickly became close to the crew, adopting the status of "everyone's little sister." The only one who did not treat her as such, was the Admiral commanding the ship, who ended up beginning a romantic relationship with her. She eventually was promoted to Chief Counselor and was involved in several classified and potentially dangerous assignments, including one that caused her to have a run-in with the Galactic Barrier, and a set of races from between universes, granting her unusual matter-energy conversion properties (colorfully referred to as 'magic'). She remained in that capacity for some time until an incursion by the Admiral's late wife's mirror counterpart stole him away to the Mirror Universe and left her behind with only a promise to return. Shortly after, the ship was sabotaged and forced to self destruct, leaving her now without a fiance, without a home and without a path to follow. She returned to Earth with a few of her crewmates, now a Lieutenant, housing them until a replacement ship could be acquired. During that time, she joined the Questor Group as a specialist in cultural mythologies and magic. Short into her tenure there, she was pulled away by her crewmates to investigate another incursion by the Mirror Universe, eventually uncovering an attempt by Starfleet security to protect itself from an attack from within. Given a chance to return with her crew to Space, she opted to stay on Earth with her new boyfriend, a young archaeologist named Richard Kennings (the same man her alternate, pregnant self from the Yorktown had married) and remained with the Questor Group. However, still being listed as Active by Starfleet Medical, and still owing her former crewmates a few favors, she did venture back to space to handle specific assignments including rescue and rehabilitation of a victim of Orion pirates, and establishing a terraforming system for a small moon as a base. She still thinks about the stars and wonders if her Admiral will return, but her boyfriend is much more comfortable with his feet on the ground, keeping her home most of the time. But once again she has a favor to do and a crew that needs her talents and is ready to go where Starfleet orders. |
