Exiting the 'lift, a mug of hot tea in hand, the Captain offered a bright, "Good morning Mr. Janis.." to the outgoing OOD (Officer of the deck). "Anything I need to know before I relieve you?"
Lt. Cmdr. Janis rose, smiling as she replied "Aye Captain, we received a communique from Starfleet just a few minutes ago. We're ordered to alter course to Tarambar, the heart of the nine worlds comprising the Ráeru Protectorate where we are to take on Heru Imlad and his entourage and convey them to one of their outlying colonies called Ver'dorlan where there's been an agricultural crisis brought about by a drought which is believed to caused an outbreak of a blight which destroyed their staple food crops. Apparently the leaders of the Colony have requested that Heru Imlad come and perform a ceremony per their cultural beliefs to re-bless the Colony and it's farmlands in hopes of restoring Balance to the planet's agricultural centers," she reported while handing the Captain a padd containing the full text of their orders. "While enroute to Tarambar, we're also advised to rendezvous with a transport that is bringing supplies as well as three new officers to fill the Asst. Chief Security and Asst. Chief Science posts, along with a new Chief Intelligence Officer."
"That's quite a mouthful for so early in the morning," Kennit commented as she accepted the padd.
"That it was," Lt. Cmdr. Janis answered.
"Everything else up to standard?" the Captain asked.
"Aye ma'am. All engineering systems are green across the board. No issues reported." came the capable reply.
"Very well Mr. Janis," the Captain said. "You are relieved."
"Thank you Captain," Janis said, then turned and headed towards the 'lift for her own rest.
Meanwhile, moving to her seat the Captain sat down and looked towards the helm. "Helm, set course to the coordinates I'm sending you now. Can you give me an ETA for our arrival at Tarambar?"
After a moment, the answer came back. "We should reach the Tarambar system in 8 hours Captain.."
The Captain paused, then said "And while I'm thinking of it.. lets launch a passive monitoring drone .. positioned to keep an eye on the derelict ship as well as the immediate area around the system. If someone comes looking to check out our activities I think I want to know it.."
"Aye Captain.." Several minutes passed, then "Monitoring drone is launched and has obtained optimal position. We are receiving telemetry from the probe, everything looks good.." the Captain was told.
"Very good," the Captain answered. "Nothing like using a state-of-the-art Federation vessel for a taxi service.. set course and engage."
"Course laid in Captain."
"What about that transport?" she asked. "How far away are they?"
A moment passed, then "The rendezvous point is 4 hours away."
Kennit nodded, "Thank you.. keep me posted on that transport." Then, turning her attention back to the padd. She was going to need to call a staff briefing to fill in the senior staff on their new orders.
When the XO arrived, the Captain motioned for him to join her. "We have new orders from Starfleet," she told him as she held out the padd for him to review. "I need for you to call a staff briefing at 1245, that gives time for the new arrivals to get aboard and at least find their quarters and check in before reporting to the briefing. I do want them present.. might as well get them right into the swing of it.."
"Alright will do. I agree let them hit the ground running. See what their in for. "New orders? Just what do these new orders say? Or are you going to hold on to your secret until we have the meeting?" He bantered easily with her.
She tapped the padd she'd just handed him with one fingernail, "It's all right there.. We've been ordered to play taxi to extend good will and strengthen friendship between the Federation and the Ráeru Protectorate. And .. while on the way we'll rendezvous with a transport bringing.." she had to twist the padd in his hand so she could read the names, "Ensigns Dakar and th'Cham aboard."
He read the PaDD, "Are you kidding? Taxi? We get pulled from out patrol to play taxi? Couldn't they have found someone else for this ahem diplomatic honor?" He shook his head, "Damn bureaucrats, well at least we're getting new crew members."
"We need them.." the Captain answered. "There's plenty of work to go around.."
"I'm not disagreeing about the additional crew Captain, I'm objecting to making the Victory a glorified taxi." Alec countered.
"Orders are orders Number One," she replied. "It could be worse.. we could have been ordered to run escort duty for the Ferengi Ambassador.."
"Can't argue that point Captain but doesn't mean I have to like this. It's a waste of our time and talent." Alec answered. Though with a Ferengi you know what you have and how to deal with them."
[Approximately 4 Hours Later, 1125, Officer’s Quarters]
Having completed the bureaucratic formalities involved in checking in to a new posting, Temek Dakar stepped into his new quarters and looked around. His position as an assistant department head was senior enough to warrant his own cabin, but junior enough that it was fairly small. He wasn’t accustomed to any kind of luxury, though, and would be plenty comfortable.
He set down the duffel bag that had served as his “carry on” for the trip on the transport, and saw that his other personal belongings had already been placed in the room. The suitcase holding his spare uniforms and civilian clothes could wait, but he wanted to make sure his art pieces and Bajoran prayer altar were safe and undamaged. After a solid once-over, he determined that they were, and knelt before the altar, saying a quick prayer of thanks for his safe transit to the Victory. Later he’d set to work finding places for the collection and mounting them on the walls, as well as unpacking his other luggage, but for now his just wanted to rest. The Delta Quadrant may not be quite the mysterious frontier it had once been, but traveling there was still no minor undertaking, and the past week had involved more time on Starfleet’s cramped personnel transports than anyone should endure. All he wanted now was a sonic shower and some time in bed before his first duty shift.
Before so indulging, however, he sat down at the room’s small desk and activated the computer terminal, checking to see if there were any messages he had to attend to. He was somewhat surprised to see a note from the vessel’s first officer. He opened it, expecting a simple “welcome aboard” message, but it was in fact a brief missive ordering him to report to the conference room by 1245 for a mission briefing. He glanced at the chronometer in the corner of the screen and groaned. That gave him barely over an hour. So much for rest and recuperation, he thought.
Resh th'Cham couldn't be happier as he entered his new quarters aboard the Victory. After over a year of mostly diplomatic and medical relief missions inside Federation space on the Kumari, he was finally going to be exploring the frontier. Plus, he was going to be serving alongside his friend from the Academy, Temek Dakar.
Setting his bags down, he noticed a message notifying him to report to a staff briefing at 1245. First day on the job and attending a briefing with the senior staff. Not bad for an ensign,. he thought. And with the briefing over an hour away, I should have enough time to check out the science lab and see what I’ll be working with. Unpacking could wait. Resh had new toys to check out.
Nina Blackburn dropped her duffel bag on the bed in her new quarters. Upon arriving, she had been informed that there was a Staff meeting. She was certain many officers would want to relax and get some sleep after a long trip but she wasn't one of those officers--she preferred to stay busy. She was happy to get off Starbase 171 and get an assignment aboard a starship. She looked out the stars streaking by outside her viewport. It had been a long time since she had a room where the stars constantly moved. She turned and headed back out of her quarters and for the staff meeting.
