Checking in Gear

Posted on Fri Nov 15, 2019 @ 3:47am by Lieutenant Nicole Anderson & Fleet Captain Rhea Kennit & Commander Cullen Walker & Senior Chief Petty Officer Samantha Summers

4,040 words; about a 20 minute read

Mission: Nibiru
Location: Main Armory and Equipment

Walker carried two boxes into the Armory. He had some weapons and gear he needed to check in at the armory. He carried them in easily. He saw the Master at Arms reviewing the the work of the armor officer. An important aspect of Law Enforcement was due diligence. "Master at Arms. Attention."

SCPO Summers spun around at the sound and came to attention. She **quickly** looked the person over and slightly smiled/smerked at the Commander's appearance. " Commander, sir. It nice to see a male taller than I on this ship. What may I do for you? "

Walker grinned, "Tall is what Walkers do best. We grow babies that can reach the top shelf." He shrugged at the idea. "So, how is the weather down there? He grinned, "In order to prevent you from Manhandling the Armory Crewman, who has fewer years of training than you do, I would like you to check in my personal gear." He opened up a rifle case, using a fingerprint and code to unlock it. He turned it around. It had several different types of rifles in it, Federation and Non Federation. There was even a Varyon-T Disruptor and a personal cloaking device, so it had to be her who checked it into inventory. The power supplies were removed on both of the "contraband" devices. There was a padd inside with authorization from an Admiral. The other case had a Walker sized Environment Suit in it.

Summers looked over the presented gear. " Very nice. *If* I am to assume that you and only you will want access to these items, I can place these said items in a locker accessible only by you and myself. Now..before you ask, I do not rummage around in other crew persons lockers. This is just an security measure." Summers then slightly smiled. " From what you have here, maybe you'd like to have one of these." She brought forth what appeared to be an ' worked over ' hand phaser. "This is one of only 20, it is an hand phaser, but it packs the wallop of an old fashion laser rifle. What do you think?"

Walker looked, "For a couple of those, you, me, Captain, and probably the Chief of Security. You understand the reason. Anytime it is opened up for inventory check, one of us has to be present. The rest is just my collection of Starfleet Antiques. They all function, but I don't need to keep them all in my quarters." He grinned.

Summers slightly grinned. " Well, I've been 'told' that they're not safe - but I've tested them in the holo deck and they work. They'll take the hide off a Klingon at ten paces..um..or any pesky Romulans.." Summers slightly raised her left arm towards Walker...." No! " She shouted.." I am not like that!! " Her face flushed a pinkish green. " I...apologize for my actions, Sir. Sometimes what I am not..or not want to be..comes forth when least expected.."

Walker looked at her, "I am Half Human, Quarter Vulcan, and Quarter Klingon. I am not Romulan. Even if I was, a little racism doesn't bother me. Sometimes, Romulans are very pesky. Sometimes, Vulcans are arrogant and narcissistic. Humans can be dense and arrogant. Klingons are Klingons." He looked her in eye, "My parents were Field Intel. They dumped me in a school on Vulcan. Children can be worse with blatant and intentional cruelty. Compared to that, your slip was funny."

Summers just looked away for a moment, then back. " My...parents..those on Romulus..are dead...I can feel it. They died when I failed in my mission, *and* was discovered. I *almost* killed my co-worker on this ship..I *tried* to kill the Captain..I think. My 'parents' on Earth..are happy for me...once in a blue moon I receive communications from them. These people think their daughter is alive..She is not. I *replaced* her right after her graduation from Star Fleet Academy...I worked my way up in the ranks, all the while believing I *was* Samantha Summers. I walk a fine line here....you are very handsome...I try to keep whom I *really* am - Karee of the Tal Shire, under control but it i difficult."

Walker raided an eyebrow. Even with the ridges, the expression was very Vulcan. "Keep going." Walker secured the weapons box and gave it to the Armory crewman. "Lock the entire case up." He looked at Summers, "We have another area to secure. Master at Arms is qualified to secure and do status reports on every area in security purview."

Summers sighed. " Let's continue then. Where or what would you like to look over next?

Walker answered, "Brig, Main Transporter, Ships Weapons. Two of those I need a Ranking Security Sign Off." He was Security and Intelligence most of his Career. Some sensitive areas of the ship need to reviewing staff. "Walk and Talk. I want to be here for my crew, but we have jobs to do before the ship out."

Summers nodded in agreement. " Walk...and talk. Very human of you, using that expression. " Summers stopped and looked at Walker. " I..apologize for my statement. "

Walker stopped when she did, "I am Half Human. Of course, I didn't spend much time with them, outside of my family, until Starfleet. You work with Security. You know how we talk."

Summers nodded in the affirmative. " Yes, I know how you folks talk." She then looked around a bit before continuing. " You are 'half-human,' I *believed* I was human, lived as an human, thought as an human. I even had human 'memories' of growing up within an human family. The Tal Shire did a great job on me, didn't they?" She said that last sentence with some anger.

They entered the brig, "It has been reported secure and ready for final inspection. His fingers touched the control station and brought the brig to life. He used the panel to lock the exterior door and notify the Captain. He moved up behind her quietly and quickly, "There is a protocol to react to statements similar to what you just said. Then investigation, both forensic, medical, and official." He didn't take chances and on the slightest movement from her, grabbed her shoulder with one hand and applied pressure to the trapezius neck bundle. Then he jammed two fingers into her side to trigger the hepatic nerve bundle, and then used the same hand to drop a fist into her abdomen in the area of her liver. He dragged her inside the cell, patted her down, and taking weapons he could find, using the approved male to female pat down. He moved outside the cell, "Computer activate level 10 forcefield. Suspend Voice Command, Authorizations, and Clearances for Senior Chief Petty Officer Summers, Samantha. Until reinstated by the Captain, Myself, and another Senior Staff in Tandem."

The computers soft voice answered calmly, “Acknowledged.”

He tapped his comm, "Walker to Kennit. We have a Security Situation in the Brig. I need you here now." He went on, "Walker to Security and Medical. You are needed at the brig. Remain outside until the Captain makes her assessment." If Kennit had reviewed Walker's file, she would know if he was calling her, security, and medical, it was bad.

Summers opened her eyes and looked around quickly and pulled herself up to face Walker...

" Why..what are you trying to do?" She asked

“What is going on Number One?” The Captains’s question came across the comm then.

Walker tapped his comm, "Possible Incursion Situation. Potential perpetrators is detained. Said individual said she was a member of a Non Federation Intelligence Organization." There was a possibility he just wasn't read in, but taking them to a cell was procedure unless the Captain overroad that procedure.

Summers yelled from her cell.." Why am I in here and where are you? I feel like a lead brick!" She leaned against the cell and tried to squint.

Walker didn't respond and he wouldn't until the Captain arrived. He wouldn't respond either. She would either read him in on something important and they would let her go, which he would possibly get an excessive force reprimand or an investigation would be ordered, and he could possibly recieve an excessive force reprimand. Either way, he wasn't going to play with Romulan Tal Shiar.

Kennit arrived shortly, looking vaguely annoyed and, upon seeing Summers in a cell - resigned. “What did she do this time?” she asked, her attention on Cmdr Walker.

Walker clicked his heals on her arrival, "Captain, she told me she wasn't terran, that she was a member of the Tal Shiar. I haven't been read in on an approved member of a Non Federation Intelligence Organization serving on our crew in a Sensitive Security function. I brought her to the Brig. I secured her by the letter of regulation. I didn't take chances though, I don't with anyone claiming to be Tal Shiar."

Summers held on to the walls of the cell and looked over at Walker and then squinted some more to find the form of the Captain. " Captain.. would you *please* tell this..this 'Gentleman' that I am not a threat!?! What I *was* I've renounced a while back..I am trying to be an officer of Star Fleet, as I was trained to be.."

Glancing at Summers, Kennit focused on her XO and said, “What exactly was going on, what did she say this time. We have had concerns about her in the past, including a very brief attempt on her part to take control of the ship. She has bee questioned at some length as I recall, though she wouldn’t sit down.” Kennit added, again flashing a dark but, amused glance at Summers in the cell.

Walker looked at the Captain, "She stated she was Karee of the Tal Shiar." He continued, "The real Samantha Summers was dead and has been right after graduation from Starfleet. She said she replaced her then. What she described was similar to a sleeper agent, quasi Manchurian Candidate. She acted like she broke the programming, and said it with distaste for Romulans."

Summers continued to hold on to the wall of the cell and answered her Captain. " Captain..you know all that he has said..I have related that to you and the others a while back. I informed the handsome fellow...the Commander I mean...about me so that he would know what I face every day. My loyalty is to Star Fleet and this ship and its crew...."

What Walker did was Starfleet Protocol and Procedures. P&Ps and Post Orders were like the bible for Security personnel. If Summers was Starfleet Security, like she claimed, she would have ve faith in the P&Ps. He wasn't impressed with her whiny behavior. He acknowledged the possibility that he wasn't read in on something, that is why he brought it to the Captain like this. That is why Security and Medical were out in the corridor. If it was a classified situation, Security and Medical could still be told it was a response drill. Considering the things Summers had said, he briefly thought about throwing her out an airlock, but Starfleet proper doesn't execute like that. Extreme circumstances and Field Intelligence, maybe.

Kennit sighed. “Again with this.. either you are Samantha Summers. Or you are Karee. This dual personality is something I can’t keep pushing off. Either you are one or the other. You need to choose. If you choose the Tal Shiar then we turn you over officially right now to Section 31. Or. You are Samantha summers in which case you can convince the XO not to shoot you. Your choice.”

Summers looked around her cell. She sighed and then looked at both the Captain & Commander. " I am Senor Chief Petty Officer Samantha Summers. I am a NonCom of Starfleet and a member of this ship's crew. It is questionable that I may 'appear' 'Romulanish' but I am Samantha. " Summers looked at the Commander. " You are my superior officer, and I will obey your orders. Please don't shoot me."

Walker looked at her, "What is procedure for dealing with someone who admits to being a Non Federation Intelligence Officer?" He was going to go through the steps, all of them with her.

Summers stared at Walker, then took a deep breath and shook her head. She looked at Walker then the Captain before continuing. " All of us, all of the crew, have 'bits and pieces' of other beings, feelings, and ways of living that are different. It is what we are and what makes the Federation unique. We have all come together to ride the wind of space to journeys far and distant. I am in this ( waving around her cubicle, ) place because you," she pointed at Walker, "do not trust me. I have said what I hope would convince you of my sincerity. Can you not accept that?

Walker asked again, "What is the procedure?" He wanted to make sure she knew her job if that situation came up.

Listening with interest, Kennit was impressed by the new a First Officer’s tactician dealing with Summers. It was apparent she continued to have issues with the mental programming overlaying two minds into one. He was giving her a chance, prodding to see just what her state of mind was and which personality was actually dominant. When Summer’s gaze turned to her, she said “The Commander asked you a question Senior Chief. He’s waiting for your answer.”

Walker just waited. He wasn't impressed with her blatant lack of security knowledge or understanding.

Summers nodded to the Captain, then turned to the Commander. "First, my apologies to you for my 'impertinent' behavior previously. 1) Upon recognizing that 'subject in question' may be hostile and or a danger to this ship and its crew, said subject will immediately be incarcerated in the ships brig. 2) Said subject will be interrogated by personnel from the following Departments: Security, Medical, and Command. 3) Said subject will answer all questions to the best of his or her ability withholding nothing. 4) Upon completion of said questioning, said subject will either be deemed not an danger to said ship and its crew, or an danger. 5) If deemed *not* an danger, said subject will be released from confinement and allowed to return to his or her duties, *or,* duties that may not be of subsequent danger to the ship and its crew, depending on the findings of said interrogators. 6) *If,* said subject is deemed an danger to said crew and ship, said subject will continued to be confined to the Brig and at an appropriate time sent to Star Fleet for Higher Command disposition. "

Walker looked at her, "In short, detain and report." He motioned to the brig. "You have been detained." He motioned to the Captain, "It has been reported." He looked at the Captain, "I may have a solution to this problem. A solution where I can lower the force field and I can tell the security outside they have responded to a security drill. It would involve the Chief Medical Officer and the Counselor, possibly the Chief of Security since she is in his department. The other solution is leave her in custody on the Starbase. Once we are on our own in deeper space, all that is left is more drastic measures."

Summers took in a big gulp and looked up at the ceiling.

"Contact the Doctor and request that she report to you here in the Brig." was the Captain's easy reply.

Walker stepped out of the brig just long enough to tell security and medics, "Thank you for participating in our drill, you are all dismissed." He stepped back inside, "Walker to Doctor Anderson. Please report to the brig, double time." This situation needed to be resolved.

Summers looked down at the floor and then at the Captain. " So, what happens now? "

"We wait for the doctor to arrive..." Kennit answered.

Summers nodded. " Would it be possible to have something to drink? My throat is bone dry.."

Walker answered, "Hands on the back of the cell. Feet spread apart. Six inches wider to your shoulders." As soon as she complied, he went over to the weapons locker and got a phaser, handing it to Kennit. He walked over to the replicator. "Water, 6 ounces plastic cup. "Stay against the wall." He walked over to the control panel and opened up a window in the force field, slang term bean hole. He set the cup inside. He closed the bean hole. "You can get off the wall." He was showing her what it would be like if she failed.

Summers got off the wall and picked up and cup and drank. She slightly smiled at Walker and flashed her blue eyes. " Thanks, that hit the spot."

Eighty seconds later, the doors opened and Anderson walked in, black bag in hand. "I'm not a fan of 'double time'," she said under her breath for the pointed ears in the room, giving Walker a look. "You called?" she said to both of them, then saw Summers in the brig. "Now what?"

Walker looked at Anderson, "Summers here has identified as Karee of the Tal Shiar. Her stated Mission was to pose as Summers who is dead according to her. Her identity needs to be confirmed. She states she wants to be Summers. I need biometrics on her to confirm she is telling the truth." He was talking about creating a classified file, a new Samantha Summers, her expatriated identity a classified. He needed to dot some i's and cross some t's. He needed to know she was telling the truth.

Nicole raised an eyebrow and looked at the Captain as if to say, "this, again?"

For her part, the Captain just waved one hand as if to say ‘Well, get on with it..’ while sighing in a long-suffering sort of way.

Nicole reached into her uniform top, pulled out her flask, uncapped it and took a long swig, then returned it to its pocket. She tapped her combadge and sighed. "Anderson to Cromwell: I need a full sample kit and relevant tools to the brig immediately."

"Yes, Doctor," Maggie said as Nicole closed the channel.

Walker looked at her. "Anderson, If her liver is bruised or lacerated, I did that along with the damage to her hepatic and trapezius nerves were me too." He walked over to force field control "Summers, hands on the wall. Medical and myself are coming in."

Summers complied with the Commander's order, and then spoke. " Commander Walker, if the doctor has to do some serious 'poking,' will you be an gentleman and turn around? I am sure the Captain and Doc can vouch for what they find."

Walker leaned up against the wall, he didn't turn his back, but he did leer either. He just answered, "P&Ps."

"Stop talking and just sit down," Nicole growled, annoyed. "Your modesty will remain intact because the Commander is going to keep his distance and give me a moment with my patient." She gave Walker a hard look, then leaned forward and looked Summers in the eyes. "And if you--either of you--get out of hand, I'll put you down without hesitation, myself. And you know I can. Are we clear?"

Summers nodded. "To quote someone whose name I can't remember at this moment, ' Clear as glass. ' "

"Good," she said. "Computer, deactivate forcefield." As the forcefield disappeared, she stepped inside the cell, setting her bag down on the floor. She snapped it open and reached in, pulling out a tricorder. She scanned Summers slowly from head to toe over and over, taking every reading she could think of.

A minute later, Ensign Cromwell appeared with two cases full of vials, swabs and tools.

"Thank you, Maggie," Nicole said, then looked as Maggie stopped just short of entering the brig. She nodded and shooed her away. "Back to Sickbay. I can take things from here," she said.

Maggie nodded a thank you, looked at Summers and scowled, then left the brig.

"Evidently she hasn't forgotten your trying to kill her," Nicole said evenly as she prepped for taking a blood sample.

Summers looked at Nicole, her blue eyes forming a '?' at her. " When did *I* do that?" She asked.

Nicole didn't hold back her growl. "You know what I mean," she snarled. She opened up one of the kits and pulled out an extractor, affixing a vial and holding it up. "I'm going to take a blood sample. Tilt your head."

Samantha looked at Nicole and raised an curved eyebrow above her left blue eye. "I'm afraid I *don't* know what you mean, but I will comply." She titled her head to allow Nicole to proceed with taking an sample.

Nicole pressed the business end against Summers' neck and pressed the trigger. A hiss sounded in the room and the vial began to fill with dark, copper-colored blood. Nicole took two samples, and placed both in the case in a break-proof box. She then picked up another thin, square capsule and a small, thin, metal rod. "I'm also going to take a few skin samples. It won't hurt. Hold out your hand," she said.

Samantha complied with Nicole's request and held her hand out for her.

Nicole ran the scraper over it gently, taking off a few epithelial cells and placed it into a sample container. She stepped back out into the cell and reactivated the forcefield.

Walker looked at the doctor, "Preliminary analysis. Is she mentally ill? Is it possible she is Romulan and telling the truth she wants to expatriate? She seems to have little understanding of Security Procedures."

"And you seem to have little briefing on her condition," Nicole said. "Evidently someone," she grumbled, looking at the Captain, "hasn't filled you in."

Summers looked at Walker then the Captain. "Well... I've always heard that....We are the sum of *all* our parts.."

Nicole looked back at the cell. "Okay, the adults are talking now," she said dismissively, turning back to Walker and the Captain.

“Is Sickbay operational to where you can maintain an eye on our troublesome Chief or should she continue to enjoy the hospitality here until this is resolved...” Kennit asked the Doctor.

"Here," Nicole said, her voice hard. "I'm not letting her near my people yet." She grabbed one of the cases and handed it to Walker. "With me," she said to them, annoyed, picking up the rest of her gear and walking out of the brig.

Walker followed her out and as soon as they were both out, "Computer, increase brig forcefield." He had been a Brig Officer enough times that he took the case. "If she is staying here, we need to read in the Security Chief, so he can assign 3 brig Officers. We can program the force field so sound or light penetrates." That would mean Summers can't see or speak to the brig personnel.

"Agreed," Nicole said.

“I thought this had been resolved already..” the Captain said. “I was under the impression that the mental programming had been reintegrated from two back into one.”

"I stabilized her as best I could, and Cassandra gave her as much help as she could, but I warned you this was going to happen," Nicole said. "This is not a true psychological condition, it's conditioning. We're dealing with a mental mask that is bound to crack eventually as the true personality struggles to reassert itself. So long as Karee is inside, pushing at the walls of her mental cage, Summers is going to..." She paused, her brow furrowing.

"I have an idea," she said. "I can't promise it will work, but it might put this to rest for a while," she said. She stuck a case under her arm and retrieved her third case from Walker. "I'll be in Sickbay," she called behind her as she quickly walked off."

Walker nodded, "I have read about something like this in lore. I will ser what I can find."
