Amid Summers' Nightmare

1,109 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Nibiru
Location: Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: 2 hours after Checking in Gear

Nicole stepped up to the Captain's ready room and rang the chime. As the doors opened, she nodded to the Captain, taking a seat.

For her part the Captain was quiet. She had a lot on her mind, and very little currently to say.

Walker walked in with a stack of padds, "What did I break this time?"

Arashi entered the room and sat down looking to the Captain for her briefing.

From her seat at the desk, Kennit just pointed at the Doctor, this was her show.

"A quick recap," Nicole said. "We have a cancer in our crew. She is an undercover Romulan agent who was given severe psychological conditioning. When she was triggered by other agents who had snuck on board as repairmen, she was activated to kill the Captain. Why anyone would wish to do that, we can only speculate." She gave the Captain a smirk.

Remaining silent, Kennit did not speak. She did however flash a universally recognized hand gesture in the doctors general direction.

"She was subdued, however the programming, for some reason, reasserted itself. It's been jarred loose a few times, and since then there has been a war for control of the brain. The conditioning is designed to dominate the original personality, that's how conditioning stays active for so long, however it's begun to break down as the original mind that came with that brain has tried to reassert itself. So, what do we do? We can't outright kill her, and the 'fake' mind says it wants to live. But so long as the original person is still in there, she will continue to degrade until she finally snaps."

She sat back and crossed her legs. "So, instead of killing her, we simply put her original mind back under. So far under that she will effectively be in an induced coma. That could allow the conditioned mind, Summers, to reassert itself and without the pressure from the Romulan, remain stable for the foreseeable future."

“Foreseeable future.” The Captain echoed. “And when the unforeseeable arises.. then what.”

Arashi thought for a moment. "Isn't there a possibility that this could backfire and bite us in our proverbial asses?" He asked with concern.

"Yes, it could," Nicole said. "There are no guarantees here. This process could have the opposite effect and force the conditioning to fully collapse, leaving us with a very angry Romulan, in which case we send her to DQ8 for incarceration as planned. Either way, the Romulan will be contained."

"Is there a plan in place to subdue her for transport should the need arise? If she is a highly trained assassin for the Romulans there is a need for contingencies if this plan goes south." He said. He was worried that Summers may not come back at all so the ship would be in danger and he knew it.

"I've got a few thoughts, but I would appreciate Arashi's lead and have security standing by," Nicole said.

Walker answered leaning back in his chair, "I have faith in our Security and SRU team." He looked at the doctor, "Nanite transport enhancers. This way even if she uses tricorder to distort transport or hides in certain Jefferies Tubes, we can still get her. They can be injected via hypospray. This way she escapes, we keep putting her back."

"I'll consider it," Nicole said. "Although I plan on having her physically incapable of walking so she shouldn't be able to run far."

“There’s another option as well..” the Captain said, her statement ending with a sharp crack of sound as she snapped a PaDD stylus in half with one hand.

Walker looked at her, "If it comes to that, I will do it." His family believed they were supposed to do all of the bad things for the greater good. They did the bad things, so others didn't have to. It was their legacy.

Nicole looked at her, then ignored her. "It will take me an hour to have a team set up a hypnotherapy stand over a biobed and assemble what I need with my staff. if Arashi can have a security team standing by in the brig, we can begin then."

"Of course. I can have a team standing by for this. I want to the crew to be safe and sound," he said. "I am going to see who will volunteer after the briefing."

Walker looked at Nicole, "I will be there too." He looked at Arashi, "Do you want to consult with Taggart so you can position the right people in the right place."

"Yes that I will do. Taggart sounds like he would be an expert in this situation so I will defer to his expertise." He said to Walker. "Nicole, do you see an issue with this?"

"It might be overkill," she said. "We'll only be exposed for a few seconds while I put her down. But, if you feel it's wise, I defer to your judgement. Just make sure they stand out of my line of fire."

"I will see to it as soon as the briefing is over." Arashi said and sat silently waiting for the end of the briefing.

Walker look at them, "This skirts going against Starfleet Protocol and the Hypocratic oath. We do have patient consent." If this worked, that would keep them from getting Court Martial-ed. He looked at Arashi, "Tell your team we had an attempted Foothold Situation, which resulted in a Medical Emergency. If you don't feel comfortable with participating in this, you won't be reprimanded by the Captain or I, and I will lead the Security Team for this assignment." This is a hard situation for any Security Lead. However, speaking up as in, following orders under protest, or requesting to be excused from an Op, Walker would respect him for speaking up.

Nicole turned to the Captain. "Do we have a go?"

The Captain just looked at her for a moment, then gave a shrug. “If she goes violent, if need be I will put an end to this issue...personally.”

"She won't get the chance," Nicole said. She stood up and nodded to Walker and Arashi. "I'll see you both in the brig in one hour," she said.

Walker looked at Nicole, "Depending on which procedure you are using, if it needs someone to go inside her head and fight, I will do it." Walkers fought so others didn't have to. Walkers protect people. Walkers do the bad, and carry that weight. So others don't have to.

"You don't have high enough boots," Nicole said, then left the ready room to prepare.
