The Binary Suns

Through the window, Admiral Harv Bennett gazed toward the pristine waters of the San Francisco Bay, and the elegant span of the Golden Gate Bridge. Small flickers of motion around the bridge indicated where conservation crews were hard at work to maintain the landmark structure, prized by Earth’s citizens as a symbol of mankind’s determination. THe bridge had been severely damaged during the Dominion war in the Breen attack of 2375, but it was quickly restored as a symbol that the Federation, that Earth would not fall. Now home to the Dominion War memorial museum, the Bridge was regularly and meticulously maintained and kept in perfect order.
So why did he feel so uneasy as he stood there, gazing over and over at the bridge.
Shaking his head, Bennett turned his ice blue gaze back to the report in hand. Eleven weeks ago, one of his operatives had been killed along with a small support team while on a mission to try and gather intelligence about a suspected rogue faction operating within Section 31 itself. The very idea infuriated him, that people within Section 31.. his people.. could be involved in a plot to disregard the Federation’s stance regarding dealings with the very militaristic and hostile Haek Civilization. Since the first encounter with the brutal, amphibian race the Federation had made multiple overtures toward a peaceful, beneficial alliance but the Haek proved too dangerous a species. They trafficked in slaves amongst their own kind, were known to be involved in multiple criminal dealings within their part of the Delta quadrant and so, an uneasy accord had been reached which was breached at will by the Haek.
Their homeworld was a swampy, hot planet in orbit around the smaller sun of a binary star system. Perhaps it was having evolved on a hostile world, with a hostile environment.. they were genetically coded for violence.
The galaxy was fortunate that the Haek were small in number, best estimates placed their numbers at 30 million individuals. They had not colonized any other worlds, and could at least be kept in moderate check when necessary.
The problem was, he had not risen to the position he know held by being naive or trusting. Something was going on, the loss of Cmdr. Hill and his support team during the retrieval mission to obtain the data device proved that. The device had been lost as well. Not destroyed. Lost. No components or trace of the device had been found in the wreckage of the observation post. Whoever had attacked them, had taken it with them when they left.
Hill had been a good agent. Well trained, smart. Not one to be easily caught off-guard.
Whatever had gone down in Fujian, it only strengthened his conviction to find out who was behind this. Who was working with the Haek to undermine the Federation’s interests?
An odd high pitched sound caught Bennett’s attention, at the same moment he identified the sound as being propulsion engines.. a massive explosion from outside the building shattered the glass window behind him.
