Nova Tips and Tricks: Updating Saved JPs

Good Day Gentle Beings!

A word - or several - from a Player / GM regarding how to write and format a post using Nova. (Note: This could become a series if everyone would contribute as we learn features and benefits of using Nova).

Some of you may or may not have been a victim of one of Nova's foibles when it comes to writing and saving posts...this primarily involves saved JPs not solo narratives...

Nova is based on a dynamic database system. Whenever you update a post and then save (or with some systems and browsers - refresh), it overwrites the last entry into the database with the new one (i.e. whatever is showing in YOUR posting window at the moment you hit refresh or save is what is sent to the database). This has resulted in the past (both here and at my Nova games) in numerous posts by one player getting overwritten by another. For this reason, the developers added a new feature called ‘Post Locking’.

Post Locking prevents other group members from being able to access a saved Joint Post while another player is actively editing or updating the document. You will see a small lock icon next to the post in the Control Panel. Hovering the mouse over the icon will display a small pop-up message telling you who is currently editing the document and how long they have been working on the indicated post.

Also, because of the fact that Nova also e-mails the posts to all authors thus we have a record of the last post. While it is undeniably quite annoying to have to go back and reinsert posts that were accidentally overwritten it is always a good idea to keep a copy of the saved posts as they come through just in case.

SOME TIPS & TRICKS

DO NOT USE THE POSTING WINDOW JUST FOR READING SAVED POSTS! If you just want to view a saved post, you don't have to go into the Writing Control Panel for that.

  1. Go to the Menu in your Admin CP
  1. Scroll to Mission Posts
  1. Click on Mission Posts
  1. Click on Saved Posts Tab
  1. Click on the Magnifying Glass icon next to the post you want to view

Use simple code to change font color, bold, italics, strike-through text, etc. Examples: TEXT (Creates red text color) TEXT (Also creates colored text) Note: You can change red to any of the basic primary colors: green, blue, yellow, gold, silver, gray. Text (Gives you bold text) TEXT (Gives you italicized text) TEXT (Gives a strike through text)

Avoid using any but the most current version of IE with Nova. IE tends to disregard internet standards and protocols (Hint: Nova really loves Chrome and Safari).
