Task Force 38 Canon Information
Created by Fleet Captain Rhea Kennit on Mon Sep 7, 2015 @ 2:44pm
Key changes proposed
The following points summarise the proposed direction in which I wish to refresh the canon:
VAdm Virkov receives disturbing reports of increased Borg activity in the Round Table zone. She personally leads a Task Group to the Round Table in order to assess the situation and, if necessary, coordinate the evacuation of Federation personnel and resources.
Shortly after arriving, Virkov bears witness to a Borg invasion. Both Starbase 900 and the Anchorage are assimilated/destroyed/abandoned (the “Battle of the Round Table”). Fearing the Borg will take control of the Federation Transwarp Network, Lazarus orders the network collapsed, lest it be used to mount a full scale surprise assimilation of the UFP.
Meanwhile, another ship, which was too far out to participate in the Battle of the Round Table discovers a solar system with a pair of M-Class moons orbiting a gas giant, (the “Hyperion System”). One of these moons is revealed to be the home of a small colony of Human, Vulcan, Tellerite and Andorian settlers (“Persephone Colony”). Their forefathers departed their homeworlds shortly after the founding of the UFP aboard one of the UFP’s earliest colony ships, the Persephone. The Persephone fell out of [radio/subspace] contact after some months in the Beta Quadrant was recorded missing in action, presumed destroyed.
Same ship transmits a report to Virkov, aboard the Helios and she orders all surviving UFP forces in the Delta Quadrant to rendezvous at Persephone Colony. However, and despite security measures taken, the forces are pursued by a Borg vessel. The Borg vessel, which had been seriously damaged during the Battle of the Round Table and therefore temporarily out of contact with the Borg Collective, is only destroyed by virtue of a daring stratagem. Virkov orders the decoupling of the Galaxy-class Helios’s saucer section which conveyed the crew and civilian population to the surface of Demeter while the stardrive section, on auto-pilot, is set to a collision course with the Borg vessel. The Helios’s saucer section lands successfully on the surface of Demeter, not far from Persephone Colony’s capital city. Virkov rededicates it as Helios Base, Starfleet’s temporary Delta Quadrant headquarters.
Cut off from the Alpha Quadrant and with few allies in their new region of space, Virkov determines that TF38 should revert to its primary mission, exploring the Delta Quadrant. Vessels in the AoO are ordered to make all attempts at seeking another Borg transwarp hub that could be re-purposed, as well as to "make friendly" with the local species, to further promote diplomacy in the area while the TF is stuck there.
Future Developments/Missions:
Encounter the Viidians. It transpires that the throw-away line in VOY:Think Tank was hubris, and the Viidians are still afflicted with the Phage.
Encounter the Kazon. Learning of Starfleet’s return to the region, the Kazon set about in new attempts to improve their lot.
Reconnaissance in the Round Table. How total was the Borg attack?
Encounter the Hirogen. One of the TF vessels, fitted with an experimental transwarp coil salvaged from the Borg Sphere destroyed by the Helios, drops out of transwarp, their transwarp coil malfunctioning. They are damaged, sensors down. The ship stumbles into a star system. The crew beam to the planet in search of supplies (or the ship puts down for repairs if feasible). On the planet, the crew discover some bodies. With Hirogen plasma burns. The sign of a previous hunt. The Hirogen return to the system to see a Starship leaving orbit. A starship damaged and in no fit state to really repel them. The hunt begins.
Key Points relating to the above changes
I envisage that Starfleet will, even after the Battle of the Round Table, have sufficient ships in the Quadrant to be a tactical power. However the TF will be facing a number of significant challenges, which will hopefully provide a real sense of purpose to the TF and give COs many mission ideas.
In the short term: survival, finding a safe haven, exploring the new region of space In the middle term: building relations with the residents of Persephone Colony, defending against recurring Delta Quadrant villains.
In the long term: finding a way home and further Delta Quadrant exploration.
Helios Station will become the Task Force Fiction and the TF38 Headquarters going forward, with Persephone Colony being attached to it.
The old canon will NOT be destroyed, retconned or decanonised. The purpose of the Borg invasion at the Battle of the Round Table is intended to move the board forward rather than destroy the old board. We plan to leave it the fate of the Round Table undetermined. Therefore the old canon will remain on the board. I would imagine that following a Borg invasion, many COs might like to re-explore it. What has become of the people and places? To the extent that any CO wishes to revisit it, we can update it based on consensus.
