1,470 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: Silence
Location: Habitable moon, Kalabsha

Standing in what appeared to have been a courtyard at one time, Rhea craned her neck back to look up to the top of the 65-meter tall central tower which dominated the courtyard. From the ground she could see the upper level was a circular balcony, reached by a staircase which she'd already determined to have been at one time made of wood and metal, long rotted away. The courtyard lay just beyond the entrance gate, and clearly what she was looking at had at one time been a watchtower.

Four smaller towers stood at each corner, reached by stone steps which rose up along the enclosure walls to reach the tops. The main entrance had been placed to the west of the courtyard, facing the rising sun which was odd in and of itself as most worlds seemed to orbit in the same directions as Earth, with the sun rising to the east and setting to the west. To either side of the main entrance had once been colossal stone guardian statues.. all that remained now were wide solid blocks of stone, the statues themselves fallen into shattered blocks of stone.

At the eastern end of the courtyard were two massive doors, one of which lay on the cobbled stone ground having fallen in some long ago year. The other still stood in place, intricately carved with a spiral pattern. Inside, once they'd entered through the open access was a long wide hallway with a layer of leaves and dirt lying undisturbed across the tiled floor, visible in spots where the passing of years and time had not quite covered the entire surface.

Further in, along the walls were more carvings. Carvings which looked eerily similar to ancient Sumerian text of earth. Scowling slightly as she studied one large panel, Kennit said "This is impossible. I recognize this."

The image showed four humanoid figures, though not quite the same as the reliefs found on Earth. The tree in the center was the same, as was the stylized image of another humanoid figure, within a circle surrounded by feathered wings and tail. "These figures.. the Sumerians of ancient Earth.. 4,000 BC.. they called them the Anunnaki.. "Those of Royal Blood"." Pointing to another panel, she brushed away a layer of mosslike growth and read the script easily. "To bear the labor, to carry the load of the Gods which was great. Their toil grievous, their troubles excessive, the Seven, greatest of the Anunnaku, for this reason created the Igigu to undertake their toils.."

Turning to the third panel which depicted seven humanoid figures, she touched each one lightly and recited their names, "The four primary .. Anu, Enlil, Enki, Ninhursag, and these.. " she indicated three winged humanoid figures and said, "The skygods.. Innana, Sin, and Utu."

Looking at Alec, she said "This is incredible. It's.. impossible but.. it's here.."

Alec favored Rhea with a look of his own, "Okay, I agree it's incredible but impossible or not it is here. Now, for the big question.Have you got any idea on how it got here?"

"Actually it's not impossible Commander. In fact we've seen it in the Delta Quadrant before, with the people that Voyager called the "37's" and those god-like beings that Cmdr Chakotay called the "Sky Spirits." Torres said. Then he looked up from his tricorder at the Captain "Hey I read all of the Voyager's logs before coming on board," he added looking at the surprised look.

"This isn't that," Cassandra said, rushing over. She looked at the Captain and then at the group. "Have you seen it? Perfectly replicated ancient Mesopotamian culture!" She looked at Torres. "The 37s were brought over with other humans as a working class. This is religious worship. There's a whole culture here." She looked back at the Captain, excitedly. "We could be looking at another 'Quetzalcoatl' situation."

Now it was her turn to be stared at. "In 2270, Captain Kirk and his crew encountered a being known as the Mayan God, Kukulkan, who seemed to be the basis for the Totec legend of Quetzalcoatl," she explained. "It was about a year after he encountered my grandmother and her people. I've always enjoyed reading about their missions." She shrugged in a girlish way, then flipped open her notebook, clearing her throat and going back to the drawings at hand. "Some of the writing is clearly Sumarian, pre-Akkadian language. However this got here, it was when the culture was still relatively young and thriving."

"The erosion on the exterior of the building structures however is indicative of long years of exposure to the elements. This place has been empty a long time.." the Captain pointed out.

Arashi looked around and was awed by it all. "If this is ancient Sumerian, then what about all of the archaeological finds on Earth? Does that mean that the Sumerians are aliens or what?" He asked, curious as to what this could mean. "If that is the case, then what does it all mean?"

"It could mean that extraterrestrial influence sparked the Sumer civilization," Cassandra said. "It's essentially the oldest urban civilization in the world. Whoever was the catalyst for that may have also influenced this planet. We know that the ancient Greek gods were alien in origin, as well as Mayan. So why not the oldest of them all?"

"We need to investigate further.. if only to collect further documentation of the ruins and inscriptions for later study." Kennit said. "And..it makes me even more interested in finding out what exactly is transmitting that message which brought us here..and trying to decode it."

Looking at Alec, she said "Lets get everyone rounded up, I want to continue following the readings Miguel got on his tricorder and see if we can reach the source.."

Alec nodded. "Agreed. Do you want to divide us up and send out search teams. so we can cover more ground in trying to determine the source of the signal?"

"Two teams.. stay in contact with regular checking every 30 minutes.."the Captain answered.

"And the composition of the teams?" Alec inquired.

She just looked at him, one eyebrow raised. Her expression carried her message well. :: Figure it out ::

Alec KNEW that look, "Um. Right." He answered simply.

In response she just sighed slightly, cocking her head to the left and waiting to see how he would split the away team into two groups..

Alec was mentally going through the personnel and divvying them up into teams. He looked at Rhea and then the rest of them as he spoke, The teams will be as follows. Miguel, Naroot, Tu'Shan, Sanders, Anderson, Casey and Mirok on one team. The second team will consist of the Captain, myself, Lt. Owens, Mr. Yarin, Dr. MacKenzie Mr. Tanaka and Mr. Gates."

Before they got more than two steps into their next walk, the Captains comm badge chimed. =/\=Victory to Captain Kennit. We have received a message from Vice Admiral Hanson, he wants to speak to you, directly via subspace video feed.=/\=

Kennit let out a flustered sigh, "I'm a little busy at the moment.."

=/\=Understood, we did send a response stating that you were currently leading an away mission however the Admiral is insistent.=/\=

Closing her eyes, the Captain said "He's going to have to wait. It's going to take some time for me to get back to the landing site. Send a second shuttle down for me. I'll rendezvous with it and return so we don't leave the away team without transportation."

=/\=Aye Captain, we'll have a second shuttle on the way in 15 minutes.=/\=

Looking over to Alec, the Captain said "Looks like you're in charge. Continue as planned, maintain contact with the ship and report in every 30 minutes."

Looks like." He agreed. "Understood. Looks like you get to miss out all the fun." He added.

The Captain just rolled her eyes. "Right.. Make certain you map put the areas you explore. Follow Torres' tricorder readings and find out what that generator is powering. And don't break anything!" she added in a louder voice, shooting a meaningful look at the other away team members.

"Message received and understood Captain. Want me to bring you back any keepsakes?" Alex asked innocently even as his eyes twinkled in merriment.

Shaking her head, she answered "No. just..don't break anything or do something foolish like.. I don't know.. wake up some ancient monstrous life form.."

"Me? Do something foolish? You must have me confused with someone else. I'm Mr.Careful." Alec quipped.

"Mmmm.." Kennit responded. "Maybe I should put the Doctor in charge. I am quite aware of just how "careful" you are. Vanaden IV. Alderazen .. that poker game on DS-5..."

"Mere happenstance. I'm a victim of circumstances." Alec continued straight face even though he was enjoying himself.
