End of the Journey

My Dearest Kathryn,
God knows if you'll ever read this or not. I think...hope...that the end of this latest journey of subterfuge is near to hand. Once this assignment is over, I will be resigning. Not just from Starfleet Intelligence, but from Starfleet as a whole. No news to report at this time. Rumors of something big. It is long past time I quit playing spy games and return to my home...to the bayou, the only place where I am truly at peace.
This last job has been the hardest. Big hit, should bring this cell in asap. Once it ends, not only will I have turned in members of a rebel terrorist group, but I'll have betrayed friends. This has long been a quandary that my chosen career presented me. They are not committing acts of terrorism because they are sulking children. There is a sincere sense of betrayal, that the Federation handed them, their colonies, and their lives over to the Cardassians like so much garbage that it was ready to be rid of. This is one of those situations where justice does not equate with what is right or wrong.
My perspective is compromised. Prolonging this mission endangers my undercover status. That is not something someone in my line of work can afford to have happen. It happened before and I nearly lost myself. Seeing it happening again, I realize that I am the only one that can do anything about it.
Hence, if you receive this, consider it my notice of resignation. I will miss Starfleet and the chance to explore the galaxy with you, but the bayou calls. It is time for me to answer that call and return home. If you find yourself in need of a security consultant, give me a call. I've toyed with the idea of setting up my own firm for a number of years...Storm Shelter, Private Security Consultants...What do you think? Has a nice ring, 'eh, sha?
Warmest Regards,
Jericho
Sighing, Jericho set down the old fashioned stylus he used to handwrite the letter and leaned back against the head of his bunk. The missive would embed itself in an outgoing data packet the next time communications were sent to another cell. Once out in the safety of space, it would detach itself and seek a Starfleet communications packet, like a computer virus or worm, and ride that to the safety of SFI. From there it would go to Kathryn Janeway who would see it and its hidden code to his control officer.
