502 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: A Whole New World: Part 1 - Precipice
Location: Turbolift/Sickbay
Timeline: 62503.71

"Just a thought," she whispered, leaning in towards him as they walked up towards the turbolift, "next time you're 'defending yourself' against hearing voices, avoid terms like 'biological crisis.'"

"Truth is truth, I do not care how it makes others feel." He eyed the Doctor curiously. "Your mental defenses are strong, have you had experience with telepaths before?"

Nicole sighed as the turbolift doors closed on them, bracing herself for a long day. "I worked under one who could melt your grey matter," Nicole said frankly, "literally and figuratively. Allows me to keep people from treading through my mental medical files."

She stepped out of the lift, and walked down the corridor and then through the doors into Sickbay, snapping her fingers at a biobed. "Hop on," she said, stepping into her office to grab her black bag.

He arrived at Sickbay with Doctor Anderson and he sat down on the table as she began her examination.

She walked back over to him and flipped her tricorder open with a hand as she set her bag down on an instrument tray. "So what is the 'biological crisis' you were talking about?" she said, cocking an eyebrow at him as she scanned.

"It is difficult to explain verbally if you would allow me to send you the information telepathically that would be far more efficient."

"I'd rather not," Nicole said flatly, shoring up her mental blocks as she did. "So you'll have to make-do."

"It is basically the completion of my maturation cycle marked by a profound increase in neural activity in the mesio-frontal cortex of my brain. Beyond that, I do not know what will happen to me. I have only heard stories, and it is different for each individual."

"Humans call that 'puberty,'" Nicole said. "Not many species have two of them, but then again not many species are built like you." She tapped her tricorder, transferring the readings to the biobed's monitors and Sickbay's computer. "So what about this is a 'crisis' exactly? If this is normal for your species, I'd hardly call that a crisis."

"The crisis lies in the unpredictable nature of the Change," he said. "Weak minds submit, strong minds fight back, becoming a danger to everyone on this ship."

"Well then," Nicole said, her eyes boring into him, "you tell me when you think you're becoming a danger and I'll have you sedated and punted out the nearest airlock." She snapped her tricorder shut and stepped back to let him sit up. "Deal?"

"There is no need to be rude Doctor you might need to reevaluate your bedside manner your job is not only to provide medical care but to be understanding of your patients whilst doing so." Yarin said as he got up and left.

"Truth is truth," Nicole said as he left, smirking. "Can dish it out, but can't take it." She tossed her tricorder up and caught it.
