Mission: All this has happened before...
Location: Engineering
Timeline: Following "Check-in checklist: Item 2"

His visit with the counselor left Chris feeling pretty good about his upcoming experience on the Victory. He briskly made his way toward Engineering, eager to see the plant. Upon entering the large doors, Chris spotted the Chief Engineer's small office off to the side. Chris knocked on the bulkhead hoping he wasn't disturbing anything important.

It had so far been a quiet morning in engineering. Which pleased Miguel to no end. It allowed him to run diagnostics on some of the secondary backups. He heard the gentle knock and looked up and saw the the young officer "Can I help you Lieutenant?" he asked after quickly noting the young man's pips.

Chris replied, "Yes, sir. I'm Lieutenant Junior Grade Halloway. I'm checking in as your new Assistant Chief Engineer."

"Oh... I wasn't expecting you for a few more days." Miguel said as he motioned for the young officer to join him. "Also I should apologize. I was a bit surprised by your name. I've never met a Vulcan hybrid with a human name, so was actually expecting some one to look more... well you know human."

"No problems, sir," Chris responded. "I caught a ride with the Concorde when they came out to take charge of the Bethesda. If not for that, then you would still be waiting. Also, Starfleet felt a bit of a rush to send me out. After your issues with the Raeru, they felt some of my collateral talents could compliment the crew. As for my name and appearance, well, Betazoid names are remarkably human, or at least the ones they've adopted to communicate verbally. Also, I was raised on Earth with the specific purpose of gaining insight to human culture, so my parents went with a more-human-than-normal name."

Entering engineering, Lt. Raylen was absorbed in information she was reviewing on a data padd and didn't notice the new arrival as she headed towards a workstation to confirm the readings.

"Well not much is really going on at the moment. Just some preventive maintenance on the secondary backups." he told the new officer when he looked up and saw Lt. Raylen walk in. "In fact here's the officer whose duties you'll be taking over. Raylen this is Lt. Halloway, Halloway this is Lt. Raylen." he said providing a quick introduction.

Chris extended his hand to LT Raylen. "It's good to meet you. I'm eager to turnover with you and get started. I look forward to continuing to work with you afterward."

Looking up from the padd, Sam smiled and shook his hand. "It's good to meet you as well. This is a fine ship.. a little cantankerous at times but for the most part nothing too difficult to tend to."

"That's great to hear. I'm sure we can sit down with the details sometime soon. I've been looking over some of the design features, and I've got a couple ideas to improve operational execution, especially when operating in Em-vam." Turning back toward LCDR Torres, he added, "That is, of course, if you and the Captain approve, sir."

That just made Sam smile a little, the Captain was known to be a tad... touchy.. when it came to her ship. Anything less than optimal performance and she wasn't happy..

"I'm always open to ideas on improving the ship and her systems." Miguel told him. In fact it was a matter of pride that he kept the Victory in tip tock condition. "I'll look at anything you have. If the simulations show a significant improvement without sacrificing in other areas I'll take it to the Captain." he added.

Chris explained, "Well, sir, it's not really a tweak to the systems so much as a link between two ordinarily disconnected systems. The idea was to link the transporter system through an encrypted communications channel to allow us to beam personnel between the 3 sections while shields are raised. We'd have to devote at least one subspace transciever from each module to make it work. Of course, we can pour over the details later.

"Do you have anything in particular for me now, sir?"

"Well since I wasn't expecting you yet, not really. But... let's look at the duty list." He called up the list on the computer screen and then began to delegate some of the work he was going to handle himself over to Lt. Halloway

Chris took a brief scan at the list. "Impulse coil reallignment... right up my alley. Fusion reactor inspection... shouldn't take too long." Chris said, muttering to himself. "No problem, sir. I'll get started on this first thing in the morning. If you don't mind, I'd like to finish getting settled in. Anything else, sir?"

While the boys were talking, Sam turned her attention back to the data she'd collected and frowned a little. The bio-neural gel packs installed up on Deck 4 were operating out of sync with the rest of the system. She wasn't finding any issues with the rest of the system, just the gel-packs installed on Deck 4, at junction D4JA19. Sam wasn't sure what the issue was, a calibration error in the software or an actual fault in the gel-pack.

Miguel saw the look on Sam's face, he had seen that look enough times to know that look wasn't good. "What's wrong Sam?" he asked.

Glancing at Torres, she shook her head slightly and answered "I'm not sure. The bio-neural gel packs on Deck 4, at junction D4JA19 are out of sync with the rest of the system. The delay is only 3 milliseconds but even so.. I can't find a cause for it. Tests on the impacted gel packs come back clean with no indication of a fault but the calibration test still shows a delay.."

"That's a brand new gel pack." Miguel said as he stood up and began to move over to where Raylen was. "Halloway before you go, take a look at this. You ever see anything like this on a fresh gel pack?"

Chris looked intently at the readings before shaking his head. "No, sir. I've never seen that before. I would expect a three millisecond delay to cause sync issues in connecting circuitry and gel packs. Perhaps the calibration equipment is off. It's the simplest cause, which makes it the most likely," Chris explained. "What do you think?"

"Sam.. go ahead and check the scanner and make sure it's doesn't need adjusting. While you're working on that I'll have O'Neill go down there and do a second check on it." he ordered. He then turned to Halloway "I'll see you in the morning then."

Raylen nodded, "I'll run a diagnostic on the calibration equipment and let you know what the results are."

Chris nodded to LCDR Torres. "See you tomorrow, sir." Turning to LT Raylen he added, "I look forward to seeing the results."

Ok. Now it's time to start making deals for the holodeck. Chris thought as he exited engineering.
