Junior Officer

638 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Nibiru
Location: USS Saint George/USS Victory

Sydney sat in her quarters aboard the Sovereign-class, USS Saint George reading when the chime sounded. She stood up, putting her book on a side table and walked to the door, smiling as it opened. "Captain Dragon! What a pleasant surprise! Please, come in."

Captain April Dragon stepped inside and draped her hands behind her back. "I wanted to let you know you should pack anything you've yet to secure and bring it to the transporter room. We'll be within range of the Victory in just under fifteen minutes."

"Oh, that's wonderful!" Sydney said, lighting up. "I'll be in the transporter room in fourteen minutes then. She paused and looked at the Captain. "Out of curiosity, why did you tell me, and not just send someone to tell me?"

Captain Dragon gave the doctor a wry smile. "So I can give you some advice," she said.

"Advice is always welcome," Sydney said.

"The crew of the Victory are very functional inmates in a very functional asylum. You're going to have your hands full. Do not let them push you around."

Sydney smiled. "I'm sure it won't be as bad as all that," she said.

Captain Dragon nodded. "I used to say things like that when I was a j.g., too," she said wistfully. "For your sake, I hope you're right. Either way, you're about to find out."

"Thank you for your hospitality, Captain," Sydney said, smiling. "I hope to see you again, some time."

"Likewise, Doctor," Captain Dragon said, nodding and leaving the guest quarters.

"USS Victory in hailing range," Ensign K'sana said from the helm.

"Well, let's not creep up on them," Captain Dragon said. "Open hailing frequencies, send standard security codes."

"Channel open," Lieutenant Martin said from the ops station.

"Victory, this is the Saint George. We have a new crew member in transit, ready to beam over to you."

The viewscreen came to life and the Victory bridge appeared, an unfamiliar group of junior officers manning the stations.

"This is Lieutenant Davenport," the tall man at the helm said. Who are you transporting?"

"Doctor Sydney Friedman, your new counselor," April said, looking around the bridge. "Where's the senior staff?"

"Planetary survey," Markus said. "Everyone's down there having fun and we've got a skeleton crew up here."

"Well, I hope they enjoy themselves. May we transport the doctor over?"

"Aye, Captain," Markus said, making a note in the ship's log. "Sending coordinates now. Transport when you're ready."

"Thank you, Lieutenant. Saint George out."

As the channel closed, April nodded to Ops. "Signal the transporter room they're all clear."

"Aye, Captain," Lieutenant Martin said, working his console.

The transporter beam seemed to last forever as Sydney rematerialized aboard her new post. When the field finally released her, she took a breath to steady herself and smiled at the transporter technician. "Hello! Thanks for the smooth ride."

The non-com at the controls nodded. "You're welcome, Ma'am. The Captain and most of the crew are on the surface performing a planetary survey, however I'm sure we can arrange quarters for you and direct you to your office if you'd like. Your luggage was beamed into the cargo bay, but we can have someone get it for you, shortly."

"Oh, no bother, I can handle that," Sydney said, grinning. "I'll go explore the ship a bit and grab my gear, and then figure out where my quarters are while everyone's away. Makes it more fun that way."

She hefted her duffel bag strap over her shoulder and nodded to the transporter chief, stepping out into the corridor. "All right," she said to herself as she set off down the corridor. "Let's see what this ship has to offer."
