Briefing

835 words; about a 4 minute read
Mission:
Plaga Navis
Location: Sickbay
Nicole walked into Sickbay and to her office, tossing her bag on her desk. She sat down behind her desk and ran a hand through her hair as she began pouring through the notes that had been sent to her regarding their next destination. She hadn't dealt with an honest-to-goodness plague in a few years, and she wanted her homework done.
When she'd finally read up all there was to read, the situation looked even more grim than she'd feared. Where she back at her hospital, she'd already be staging a quarantine zone and assigning staff but space was more of a premium on a starship. There were protocols, naturally, but she was already thinking what could go wrong and how she would need to counter those setbacks. She was also going to need her entire staff, and then some.
She quickly sent a message to the science chief back on the bridge as well as Penny.
Report to Sickbay for a brief briefing.
She then sent word for all off duty personnel to report in, as well as those in the Aux Sickbay. It was going to be crowded, but at least she wouldn't have to make her speech twice.
She spent the next several minutes finishing up paperwork and making notes on a padd, then directing everyone as they began funneling in. When the last of her staff had arrived, and Camille and Penny walked in, she put her fingers to her mouth and gave a shrill whistle that immediately got everyone's heads turning.
"We have a situation," Nicole said. "We're en route to a starship that has reported an outbreak of an as-yet undiagnosed fatal illness. Once we arrive, we are transferring to an off-synch, four-shift rotation with the exception of myself and Lieutenant Naroot who will be working as needed and are to be kept in the loop on all updates."
She glanced at her padd and over the crowd. "Alpha and Beta teams, I need Cargo Bay 6 converted into a clean room lab and portable morgue ASAP. I don't care where the cargo goes, but have whoever's in charge get it out of there. Gamma and Delta, double check environmental controls and make sure all safeguards are working. Also, until further notice, there should be no air transfer between the modules. Epsilon and Zeta, keep staffed here until further notice. To those of you losing sleep over the new shifts, I'm sorry. Needless to say I am not going to be my normal cheery self either."
There were a few good-natured chuckles from the more well-worn staff, the more recent ones still wondering if they were being baited.
"Let's get to work and get on the new rotation," she said. "Dismissed."
As everyone moved to get back to work, bed or otherwise, she pointed at Penny and Camille and gestured to her office, heading in ahead of them.
She sat behind her desk and looked at Camille first. "I assume you'll be keeping me looped in on anything you find," she said. "I'm going to be asking your assistance in finding a cure, given your skills."
“Of course,” replied Camille. “I’m at your service. Put me in Alpha team, and I can run your Cargo Bay 6 lab and report everything we find. My department can work from the bio lab and provide support.”
Nicole considered it. "I don't know if I want you exclusively in the bay, but I would appreciate any input you have on equipment we should include. I need one of us outside of the Secondary Module at all times."
“Understood,” Camille said. “I’ll give your team an equipment list and will work from bio lab one.”
Finally she turned to Penny. "I need you to have separation protocols ready to go at a moment's notice. If we find we've lost contamination, I want to separate the sections of the ship and keep casualties to a minimum. All samples will be in the Secondary Module. If it goes wrong, we all go together."
Penny ran a thousand calculations and then nodded. "All right. Do you need me on hand?"
"No, I don't think so," Nicole said. "Another nurse on hand isn't as valuable as what you can do to double check the medical computers. Also, I need you to be my logistics person. We need evac plans for the secondary module in case of outbreak. I need you on the bridge, protecting the crew. And..." she inhaled and rallied herself. "Keep the Captain and XO out of here and together. If we're forced to separate and they get split again, then even if we find a cure, she'll kill us all."
"Good point," Penny agreed. "Okay, I can get most of it done from the Ops station.
"Questions?" Nicole said, looking between them.
Penny shook her head and looked at Camille.
Camille shook her head, too. She was ready to do her part.
"All right then," Nicole said. "Dismissed. I'll be in touch."
